Part Of Your Prenatal Care

Your medical ultrasounds

Most pregnancies include three ultrasounds, timed to match your visit schedule. Each one tells us something different about you and your baby.

01

Confirmation · 8–10 weeks

Confirms your pregnancy, checks your baby’s heartbeat, sets your due date and shows how many babies you’re carrying.

02

NT ultrasound · 12–13 weeks

Measures a small fluid space at the back of your baby’s neck. With blood work, it helps screen for certain chromosomal conditions.

03

Anatomy · 18–20 weeks

A detailed look at your baby’s brain, heart, spine and organs, plus growth, the placenta and amniotic fluid.

Extra Ultrasounds

When you may need a closer look

Some pregnancies need more ultrasounds. This is common and helps us keep a close eye on you and your baby.

What To Expect

Your ultrasound, step by step

Ultrasounds are quick, painless and a favorite visit for many parents. Here is how it works.

01

Check in

Let us know if this is a medical or elective ultrasound and whether you’d like to bring family into the room.

02

Getting ready

You’ll lie back comfortably. A warm gel is placed on your belly to help the sound waves travel.

03

The scan

A small handheld wand moves gently over your belly. Early in pregnancy, a vaginal ultrasound may give a clearer view.

04

Your pictures

We’ll show you your baby on the screen. Your provider reviews medical ultrasounds and shares the results with you.
