Historically, the practice of midwifery has had an important role in the care of women and their families. What midwives do and how they are educated can be very different across countries and cultures. However, all midwives share the common goal of supporting a woman through the normal process of pregnancy and birth. In fact, midwife means with woman.
In the United States, a midwife is a Certified Nurse-Midwife, or CNM. We are Registered Nurses with advanced education in Midwifery and have Masters Degree in Nursing. While midwives are often thought of as home birth or birth center attendants, most CNM’s deliver babies in a hospital (94.2%). 1 CNM’s are also educated in reproductive and primary health care. By law, nurse-midwives are independent health care providers and can legally write prescriptions in all 50 states.
Most women have normal, healthy, low-risk pregnancies. Certified Nurse-Midwives specialize in the care of these women. In general, we believe that birth is a natural life event, rather than a medical condition that needs treatment. However, we are well trained to identify any abnormal or high-risk problem that may occur in pregnancy. When needed, we work closely with our doctors to develop the best plan of care for the woman and her family.
At CIMA, the midwives strongly believe in providing patient centered care across a woman’s lifetime. This includes your gynecological and family planning care, as well as, pregnancy and birth. We support the following midwifery roles, as outlined by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM):
-
Promoting a continuous and compassionate partnership
-
Acknowledging a person’s life experiences and knowledge
-
Including individualized methods of care and healing guided by the best evidence available
-
Involving therapeutic use of human presence and skillful communication
